Do You Need to Get in Shape Before Starting CrossFit?
No. You don't need to get in shape before you start CrossFit. At a coached gym, the workout is adjusted to you, not the other way around.
It's one of the most common things I hear from people who've been thinking about RNF for a while: "I want to lose a little weight first," or "Let me get my running back up, then I'll come in." It makes sense on the surface. Nobody wants to be the person in class who can't keep up.
But in my experience, "get in shape first" is usually the plan that keeps people from ever starting. Here's why, and what actually happens when you walk in as you are.
Why "getting in shape first" usually backfires
- There's no finish line. "In shape enough" keeps moving. Most people who wait for it are still waiting a year later.
- You're doing it alone. The hardest part of getting fitter isn't knowing what to do. It's doing it consistently. Training by yourself removes the coaching and the people who notice when you don't show up.
- You practice the wrong things. Without someone watching how you move, it's easy to build habits you'll have to undo later, especially with squats, deadlifts, and anything overhead.
How a coached class meets you where you are
At RNF, everyone in class works from the same workout, but not necessarily the same version of it. The coach helps each person find the version that fits where they are today:
- Can't do a pull-up yet? You get a progression that builds the same strength.
- The prescribed weight is too heavy? The load changes to match your current strength.
- A movement is beyond you right now? The coach swaps in an option that still trains the same thing.
You're training alongside people who've been coming for years, but you're not expected to do what they do. That works in both directions: as you get stronger, the same coaching keeps raising the challenge so it doesn't stay easy.
That last part matters. Starting where you are doesn't mean taking it easy forever. We believe people are capable of hard things. Good coaching makes sure it's the right hard thing for you.
What your first few weeks actually look like
Most people are surprised by how much of the early work is learning. Coaches teach the movements before you load them, check your positions, and correct things in real time. Expect to be sore at first, and expect some days to feel harder than others. That's normal.
What you should notice after a few weeks is that the movements feel more familiar, you recover a little faster, and showing up starts to feel like part of your week instead of something you're forcing yourself to do.
What actually matters on day one
Not your fitness level. What matters is that you're willing to show up, listen to your coach, and be honest about how things feel. If something hurts in a way that doesn't feel right, say so. If you have an old injury or a health condition, tell your coach before class so they can plan around it, and check with your doctor if you're unsure whether exercise is right for you.
How to start at RNF
If you're in the Glasgow area and this sounds like you, the easiest first step is our Free Intro & Tour. It's about 30 minutes, with no workout and no obligation. We'll talk about your goals and what's been getting in the way, show you around, answer your questions, and recommend a way to start.
